Using Shadow and Highlight Command in Photoshop

Shadow and Highlight:
The Shadow / Highlight command is suitable for correcting photos with silhouetted images due to strong backlighting or correcting subjects that have been slightly washed out because they were too close to the camera flash.  The new Image > Adjustments > Shadow/Highlight command is a good alternative to Curves when working with images that need more pronounced shadow and/or highlight detail. In its simplest form, you just move the Shadows slider to brighten the darker areas of your image and/or move the Highlights slider to darken the brighter areas of your image.

Following are the steps which you should follow to adjust shadows and Highlights:
1. Select Image > Adjustments > Shadow / Highlight. For better result click the Preview option in the Shadow / Highlight dialog box.

2. Adjust the mount of lighting correction by moving the Amount slider or entering a value in the Shadows or Highlights percentage box.  Both Shadows and Highlights can be adjusted in an image.

3. If you really want to get control over the adjustment, you'll definitely want to turn on the Show More Options check box so you can see the full range of settings available.

4. After you are done with all the adjustments (Amount, Tonal Width, Radius, Brithtness, Midtone Contrast and Black Clip and White Clip), click OK.
